1,260-Pound Blue Marlin at Atlantis Canyon: Cape Cod Fishing

A truly remarkable catch off Massachusetts is putting Cape Cod canyon fishing in the national spotlight. On August 19, 2026, Captain Damon Sacco, angler Walter Chapman and the crew of the Castafari landed a massive 1,260-pound Atlantic blue marlin while fishing Atlantis Canyon, roughly 100 miles off Cape Cod.

The fish measured more than 11 feet long and, according to reporting from The Associated Press, is believed to be the largest Atlantic blue marlin ever caught off the U.S. East Coast. The catch came within 142 pounds of the Atlantic blue marlin world record.

Why This Catch Matters for Cape Cod Offshore Fishing

For anglers, this is another reminder of just how extraordinary the offshore waters south and southeast of Cape Cod can be. The deep-water canyons along the edge of the continental shelf create opportunities to encounter some of the Atlantic’s most exciting pelagic species.

Atlantis Canyon was the location of this historic marlin catch. Depending on the season, water conditions and bait, offshore trips can put anglers in waters holding bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, marlin and other offshore species. No offshore catch is ever guaranteed, but that unpredictability is part of what makes canyon fishing such an adventure.

A Three-Hour Battle With a Giant Blue Marlin

The giant marlin reportedly took approximately three hours to land on rod and reel. After returning to Falmouth, the fish weighed 1,260 pounds. Researchers are expected to study the fish to learn more about its age; one marine scientist cited by the AP estimated it could potentially be 25 to 30 years old.

Cape Cod Canyon Fishing

Canyon fishing is a completely different experience from an inshore striped bass or fluke trip. These are serious offshore adventures that require long runs, capable equipment, careful planning and an experienced crew.

Fish Happens Charters operates from Bass River on Cape Cod and offers fishing opportunities ranging from local striped bass and fluke trips to serious offshore fishing. Our goal is to match the trip to the anglers, the season and current fishing conditions.

Could Another Giant Marlin Be Out There?

Absolutely nobody can predict the next fish of a lifetime. That’s fishing. But a 1,260-pound blue marlin coming from Atlantis Canyon demonstrates the caliber of marine life that can move through the offshore waters accessible from Cape Cod during the right conditions.

For anglers interested in tuna, canyon fishing or other offshore Cape Cod trips, keep an eye on our fishing reports for updates as conditions change throughout the season.
